{"id":506,"date":"2022-05-09T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/to-embrace-hustle-culture-or-reject-it\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T16:47:41","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:47:41","slug":"to-embrace-hustle-culture-or-reject-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/to-embrace-hustle-culture-or-reject-it\/","title":{"rendered":"To Embrace Hustle Culture, or Resist It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Ah, the age-old question facing most Americans who work for a living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">On one hand, you\u2019ve got the Gary Vees and Codie Sanchezes of the world who insist that <em>hustle is the only way<\/em>\u2014the way, the truth, and the light in building a life of passion and cash-flowing assets.<em> If you\u2019re not willing to work hard, then why do you deserve anything, you lazy piece of shit?!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And on the other hand, you\u2019ve got the growing resistance to hustle culture\u2014people who insist via forums like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiwork\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">subreddit r\/antiwork<\/span><\/a> that \u201cunemployment should be for all, not just the rich.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The faces of the \u201canti work\u201d movement are\u2014unsurprisingly, and characteristically for Reddit\u2014more anonymous in their beliefs than the outspoken proponents of hustle culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And honestly, I waver pretty dramatically between the two camps:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">On the one hand, I find Gary Vee rhetoric to be inspiring. He\u2019s dropped gems like:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cLearn the work ethic and skills that match your ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cWithout hustle, your talent will only get you so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cIdeas are nothing. Execution is the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I mean, shit. I\u2019m lacing up my bootstraps and ready to <em>lift<\/em>, baby! I\u2019m a lean, mean, earning machine, and I\u2019m ready to <em>execute<\/em><strong>\u2122.<\/strong> This brand of radical accountability (\u201cYour legacy is being written by you\u2014make the right decisions,\u201d) is empowering, in a weird way, because it suggests that you\u2019re the only one that\u2019s in control of your outcomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kinda makes you wanna take black-and-white pensive photos of yourself and layer inspirational quotes on top of them, no?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(Whether or not that\u2019s actually true is another story, but from a motivation standpoint, it carries some weight.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Codie is a little less sugary with her takes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cIf you do what the average person does, you\u2019ll be average.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cMost people only have one income because building cash flow is hard. Do the hard thing instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And, my personal favorite: \u201cContrarian opinion:<em> [Anytime something starts with contrarian opinion, you know you\u2019re in for it.] <\/em>There&#8217;s no such thing as being &#8220;underpaid.&#8221; The money you make = the value you deliver + how replaceable you are + your negotiation ability. If you&#8217;re not satisfied, it&#8217;s on you to change those 3 things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Again, it all <em>sounds<\/em> a little harsh, but\u2026 are either of them really <em>wrong<\/em>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hustle culture isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all methodology<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is the hard part: The more I learn about the economic reality of a lot of Americans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/minimum-wage-2019-almost-half-of-all-americans-work-in-low-wage-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">44% of Americans are considered low wage workers, a number that I find staggeringly high, with median annual wages of $18,000<\/span><\/a>), the more I, too, feel inclined to push back on the hustle culture mentality on their behalf.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">From the same article:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cMost of the 53 million Americans working in low-wage jobs are adults in their prime working years, or between about 25 to 54, they noted. Their median hourly wage is $10.22 per hour \u2014 that&#8217;s above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour but well below what&#8217;s considered the living wage for many regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Even though the economy is adding more jobs, there&#8217;s increasing evidence that many of those new positions don&#8217;t offer the kind of wages and benefits required to get ahead. A new measure called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobqualityindex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Job Quality Index<\/span><\/a> recently found there is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/american-jobs-are-getting-worse-according-to-a-new-economic-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">a growing number of low-paying jobs<\/span><\/a> relative to employment with above-average pay.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(This is the part where I try to square ambitious, content-creating entrepreneurs who insist your life sucks because <em>you<\/em> suck with this economic data that suggests many jobs simply don\u2019t offer the compensation necessary to have a chance at improving your situation.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The bootstrap answer, of course, would be to tell those 53 million Americans to \u201cget off their asses and work,\u201d but that seems to be the issue: These people <em>are<\/em> working.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Should they work more? Should they be paid more? Should they take out a bunch of loans to live on so they can go back to school and get educated and maybe get a better job? Should we automate these jobs and free them up to do something that <em>does<\/em> pay more?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(Because I\u2019d assume these 53 million people are doing jobs that local economies need to function, like servers, cooks, wait staff, cashiers, etc.\u2014if all 53 million of them strapped up their boots and dipped, certainly things would start to fall apart a little. That\u2019s my main criticism of the bootstrap mentality for <em>all<\/em>. It ignores the glaring reality that that shit <em>does not work at scale<\/em> because society <em>needs<\/em> these types of workers to function properly.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I don\u2019t know what the answer is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But what I <em>do<\/em> know is that I\u2019m willing to push back on hustle culture jargon on behalf of these people. While the data wouldn\u2019t suggest that most of them are working multiple jobs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2021\/02\/new-way-to-measure-how-many-americans-work-more-than-one-job.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">fewer than 10% of Americans<\/span><\/a> have two or more jobs), they <em>are<\/em> working. And if you\u2019ve ever worked a service industry job for more than 30 minutes, you know that shit is <em>hard<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s a globally recognized trope that Americans are obsessed with work (\u2018live to work\u2019) while our rich European counterparts \u2018work to live.\u2019 (The irony here is that Americans are <em>also<\/em> assumed generally fat, dumb, and lazy by other parts of the world, so I\u2019m not sure. Which is it, guys? Are we obsessed with work, or fat and lazy?)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The case <em>for<\/em> embracing a certain brand of hustle culture<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Where I draw the line in the sand may surprise you, and it might also sound reminiscent of an old, widely flamed Financial Samurai article entitled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialsamurai.com\/average-hours-worked-per-week\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Are There Really People Who Work Fewer Than 40 Hours Per Week and Complain They Can\u2019t Get Ahead?<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The people who I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> willing to give a pass to? People like <em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I grew up in middle class middle America with two educated parents who sent me to private school and encouraged me to work hard with both emotional and financial incentives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I had no student loan debt and got a full-time job less than a year after graduating from college that paid $52,000 per year. I was able-bodied and (I think) a <em>relatively<\/em> competent person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I worked regular hours (8-5), five days a week, and the expectations levied on me at work weren\u2019t extreme or unreasonable. I can count on one hand the number of times I had to work late or work on a weekend in the four years I worked for that company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In short, someone like <em>me<\/em> has no room to complain that she can\u2019t get ahead, because she\u2019s being paid fairly to do a reasonable amount of work and has plenty of free time to expand those working hours and earn more doing something else<em> if she wants to<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is where, I think, the Big Girl Accountability rubber has to meet the road and an assessment of values and goals has to take place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If I\u2019m salty that my average job with average pay isn\u2019t enabling me to live a lavish lifestyle, that\u2019s on me\u2014I don\u2019t <em>deserve<\/em> to live a fancy lifestyle if I\u2019m only willing to work for (realistically) fewer than 40 hours per week doing a job where my performance is ultimately replaceable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Make no mistake: I deserve to have a roof over my head, food to eat, access to healthcare, and mental health breaks when necessary\u2014in my opinion, those things are just Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs-ass human rights, and I hate that <em>even being able to see a doctor in a timely fashion<\/em> is a conversation that involves acknowledging privilege in America. The fact that these things are considered privileges in the richest country on planet earth is unjustifiable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But do I deserve to go to bottomless brunch every Sunday? To wear designer clothes? To live in a luxury high rise apartment? To become a multimillionaire? Uh, no\u2014I don\u2019t <em>deserve<\/em> any of that stuff, unless I want to <em>work<\/em> for that stuff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And <em>that<\/em> is precisely where I think hustle culture serves a useful purpose: To light a fire under your ass and remind you that <em>nobody\u2019s going to do it for you<\/em>. The DM that\u2014to this day\u2014sticks with me the most?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cMaybe we, as Americans, have a warped sense of the type of lifestyle we deserve.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The same advice that\u2019s totally appropriate and applicable to a 24-year-old guy with a college degree making a high five-figure income working 40 hours per week in a climate-controlled office is <em>not<\/em> appropriate and applicable for the 40-year-old single mom working two restaurant jobs to feed her kids and keep them in partially subsidized housing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Telling that dude with a white collar gig to \u201cjust work harder\u201d if he wants to earn more is valid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Telling that same thing to the single mom is just insulting.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The trouble with hustle\u2019s \u201cmoral superiority\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And it\u2019s worth reiterating that someone shouldn\u2019t <em>have<\/em> to engage in hustle culture <em>if they\u2019re content with their salary and lifestyle<\/em>. Being a \u201chustler\u201d doesn\u2019t make you morally superior, though most of the rhetoric would suggest otherwise (thanks for that, Protestant work ethic).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Working 40 hours per week for $52,000 per year is <em>great<\/em> if you\u2019re happy about the results. We shouldn\u2019t assign a moral high ground to \u201chustle\u201d and I\u2019m certainly not trying to imply that hustling should be necessary to <em>meet your basic needs<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u2026just that if you want to live the high life, you should probably expect to do a little more than that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After all, as Financial Samurai points out in his controversial post about Americans working less than we think, the US Census Bureau reports that the average hours worked by Americans are actually going <em>down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/ScreenShot2022-05-06at10933PM.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I talked on the podcast a few months ago about how the obsession with financial independence in America is a cry for help; in that podcast, I discussed the way in which people are working less because work is getting more demoralizing. I still think that\u2019s true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But <em>demonizing<\/em> working harder (rather than acknowledging that, for <em>some<\/em>, it really <em>is<\/em> the answer to earning more and progressing faster) misses the point: Some people need true economic intervention and higher wages (approximately 53 million of them).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Others\u2014who want to earn $200,000\/year and live the high life\u2014are probably better candidates for introducing a little elbow grease to the equation and making some savvy business decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is your brain on Late Stage Capitalism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ah, the age-old question facing most Americans who work for a living.
