She stood in front of a giant sticky easel with <em>HOT GIRL SHIT <\/em>scrawled in Sharpie across the top, and definitions of the 401(k) and IRA underneath it. Her friends sat scattered around a room with charcuterie boards covering every visible surface. It was love at first sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Jenny and I stayed in touch\u2014and she shared with me recently that she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2011, an invisible disability that she\u2019ll have for the rest of her life. For the uninitiated, ulcerative colitis makes it difficult to leave the house during flare-ups because one needs constant, ready access to a bathroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s a \u201cminority\u201d group that the majority of people  will join either permanently or temporarily at some point in their lives.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Jenny co-founded a community called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theinclusivetraveler\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">The Inclusive Traveler<\/span><\/a>\u201d with her friend and coworker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_sittingpretty_\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Kelsey Ibach<\/span><\/a>, who began using a wheelchair at the age of 25 after a car accident with a drunk driver left her paralyzed from the waist down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I invited them to join me for this week\u2019s episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-hidden-costs-of-a-disability\/id1589146097?i=1000605283140\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><em>The Money with Katie Show<\/em><\/span><\/a> to share more about the hidden costs of living with a disability\u2014from the challenges of traveling to planning for medical care in retirement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/disabilityfacts\/facts.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong>One in four people<\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong> in the US will become disabled before they reach traditional retirement age.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s a \u201cminority\u201d group that the majority of people (whether through genetic preconditions, an accident, or the process of aging) will join either permanently or temporarily at some point in their lives, yet it\u2019s a topic that\u2019s almost wholly absent from personal finance discourse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In her first year after the accident, Kelsey racked up nearly $100,000 in costs <em>just to maintain her same, pre-accident standard of living<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The driver fled the scene, but due to poor signage in the area, Kelsey was able to sue the city of Chicago to recover some of the costs associated with her accident\u2014highlighting the way successful litigation is often one of the only ways to guarantee financial help after an accident, even if you have health insurance, like Kelsey did. (And we all know lawyers aren\u2019t cheap; that\u2019s why I married mine!)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>Working-age adults with disabilities are twice as likely to have incomes under the poverty line than those without.<span>\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n  <\/blockquote><figcaption class=\"source\">&mdash; National Disability Institute<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The costs Kelsey outlined in our discussion may seem extreme, but they aren\u2019t out of the ordinary:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A 2020 report from the National Disability Institute found that adults \u201cwith a work disability require an annual average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldisabilityinstitute.org\/reports\/extra-costs-living-with-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">28% more<\/span><\/a> income (or an additional $17,690 per year for a household at the median income level) to create the same standard of living as a comparable household without a disabled family member,\u201d and that working-age adults with disabilities are <em>twice as likely <\/em>to have incomes under the poverty line than those without.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This emphasizes the way in which costs can be both direct (in the case of extra accommodations needed to live day-to-day life, like retrofitting a shower or finding accessible transportation) <em>and<\/em> indirect (in the case of employment discrimination, or when a caretaker needs to take a lower-paying job or work fewer hours to care for a family member with a disability).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Having a disability is <em>expensive<\/em>, and it\u2019s usually something we don\u2019t plan for<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u2026despite the fact that most of us will be part of the disabled community at some point in our lives.&nbsp;Let\u2019s break down the major expense areas that are typically impacted:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Housing<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Depending on the nature of the disability and where you live, you may need to either seek out accessible rentals or renovate your home. Kelsey, for example, lived and worked in Chicago and had to pay a premium for an apartment with an elevator near accessible transportation, typically found in \u201cprime\u201d locations that cost more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you own your home and need to install a chair lift, a sit-down shower, wheelchair ramps, additional railings, and other accommodations for mobility\u2014it can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeadvisor.com\/cost\/disability-accommodation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">cost upward of $20,000<\/span><\/a> to cover the basics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Unfortunately, many insurances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/healthy-aging\/shower-chairs#:~:text=Most%20insurance%20plans%20don't,want%20for%20the%20best%20price.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">won\u2019t cover<\/span><\/a> these costs, despite being necessary. While you <em>may <\/em>be able to get a tax break for these updates, you\u2019re often paying out of pocket, which highlights how crucial an emergency fund can be (and how unexpectedly you may need it).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Transportation &amp; Travel<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cAdapted vehicles\u201d are cars modified to meet the needs of someone with a disability, and according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/road-safety\/adapted-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/span><\/a>, they can cost up to $80,000 (more than the median American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2021\/demo\/p60-273.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">earns<em> in a year<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">)<\/span><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Many people with disabilities rely on public transportation or ridesharing, which usually means living in an urban area where public transportation is common. The cost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/990891\/us-average-monthly-passes-in-transit-mode-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">public transportation<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/890167\/average-cost-per-ride-ridesharing-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">rideshares<\/span><\/a> combined can average about $200\/mo. or $2,400\/year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And while buses and trains in major cities tend to have accommodations for disabilities, air travel is more of a crapshoot (this is part of what inspired Kelsey and Jenny to start The Inclusive Traveler). Whether it\u2019s the process of navigating a large and busy airport, using a bathroom on a plane, or trusting untrained personnel with your accessibility devices, traveling with a disability requires a lot more forethought than I had ever considered.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Healthcare<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kelsey\u2019s health insurance didn\u2019t cover the cost of certain medical supplies\u2014and many insurances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/wheelchair-costs-insurance-latt-123\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">don\u2019t cover<\/span><\/a> the cost of custom-fit wheelchairs, which can be necessary to retain independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Living with a disability often means requiring some sort of device to perform everyday functions: talking devices, canes, prosthetics, specific lighting, hearing aids, medication\u2026the list is long!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While some of these costs can be reimbursed by a Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account, or health insurance, the coverage is frustratingly spotty. According to the latest available numbers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/data-highlights.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">the CDC<\/span><\/a>, the average person with a disability spends $17,431 per year on the associated costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And yet this <em>doesn\u2019t account<\/em> for the actual <em>cost <\/em>of healthcare itself, from the higher insurance premiums for higher quality plans to the out-of-pocket costs for doctor\u2019s visits, tests, and therapies. (We\u2019ve chatted extensively about the bewilderingly obvious grift that is the US healthcare marketplace in Money with Katie World before; here\u2019s how I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-im-budgeting-for-healthcare-in-the-united-states-in-the-least-frustrating-way\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">budgeted for healthcare costs<\/span><\/a> in the past.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/report-section\/ehbs-2022-section-1-cost-of-health-insurance\/#:~:text=The%20average%20premium%20for%20single,in%20large%20firms%20(%247%2C873).\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Kaiser Family Foundation<\/span><\/a>, the average annual premium for an individual\u2019s healthcare coverage was $7,911\/year in 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So what\u2019s the total? (Plus, long-term disability coverage)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Everything we\u2019ve discussed totals nearly <strong>$15,000 additional (potentially fixed) costs each year <\/strong>between increased housing expenses, insurance premiums, and transportation (which is in line with the estimated average around $17,000 per year).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But as Kelsey mentions in the episode,<strong> long-term disability (often abbreviated as \u201cLTD\u201d) insurance can help offset these costs <\/strong>because it replaces lost income from work.&nbsp;(We covered long-term disability insurance in depth <a href=\"\/disability-insurance\" target=\"_blank\">in this episode<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Expect to pay anywhere between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianlife.com\/disability-insurance\/long-term-disability-insurance-cost\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">1%\u20133%<\/span><\/a> of your annual income in LTD premiums. I\u2019ll say the quiet part out loud: <em>This stuff is not cheap<\/em>, but it can be lifesaving in the event of disability. The paradox, unfortunately, is that those most in need of this type of insurance are often those most unable to afford it\u2014but Kelsey told me her one regret was not getting it before she needed it. (So if your employer offers LTD, say yes!)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>Long-term disability insurance can help offset these costs because it replaces lost income from work.\u00a0<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianlife.com\/disability-insurance\/long-term\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Most policies<\/span><\/a> will pay you benefits up until the time you reach retirement age, depending on the details of your policy. There are <em>usually<\/em> no limitations on how the money can be spent. It can be invaluable as income replacement if you\u2019re unable to work, as Kelsey was for many months after her accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaldisabilityinstitute.org\/financial-resilience-center\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">other resources<\/span><\/a> out there to support living with a disability, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/disability-financial-support\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Social Security<\/span><\/a>, Medicare, and Medicaid, to name a few\u2014but they\u2019re not always comprehensive and are typically limited to those who meet fairly narrow age or income requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The reality is that one in every four people will be disabled before they reach retirement age. While it\u2019s hard to save for these circumstances specifically, it makes a great case that <a href=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-im-budgeting-for-healthcare-in-the-united-states-in-the-least-frustrating-way\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">quality healthcare<\/span><\/a>, buffered savings cushions, and long-term disability insurance are probably all worthwhile expenses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three years ago, a member of the Rich Girl Community named Jenny Burke reached out to me to share a picture of herself teaching her friends about personal finance.
