Think back to the last time you bought a flight. Right now, it\u2019s a little trickier (and a lot closer).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As airlines try to stimulate demand for both their air product and their credit card offering (the two biggest money makers for most airlines), they\u2019re doubling down on their in-path (<em>i.e., in the process of booking<\/em>) offers to help customers afford air travel <em>and<\/em> sign up for the card. A true coup for the airline, and a pretty good deal for the consumer, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong>Normally<\/strong>, these offers are simple and lackluster: about $200 off the cost of your purchase in the moment, with no points to speak of. I usually discourage this approach because (almost always) the points bonus option in the regular card application is worth (sometimes substantially) more. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Note: By \u201cthe regular card application,\u201d I mean the credit card offer that\u2019s totally separate from the one you\u2019re offered while you\u2019re actually purchasing a flight. It\u2019s the one that would come up if you Googled \u201cAmerican Airlines credit card.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For example, here\u2019s the current American Airlines offer: 50,000 miles. Keep in mind that point valuations vary depending on the source, but if you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/monthly-valuations\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Points Guy\u2019s July 2020 assessment<\/a>, he values one American Airlines mile at 1.4 cents (I think this is generous, but I digress). <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This means 50,000 American Airlines miles are worth about $700. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5e94adbc25a0ae61d843b475\/1596464668292-RV7JHGAC0LZ21QY2H6TB\/50%2C000+points?format=original\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Remember the American Airlines instant credit offer during checkout? $250 off your purchase and 40,000 points?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">40,000 points = $560 + $250 (knocked off your purchase of the flight) = $810. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">OPE. This is rare, my friends. I can\u2019t remember the last time (if ever) that the credit card offer during checkout was more lucrative than the real thing. And why would it be? The hope is that you take a less valuable offer for instant gratification in the moment, versus slaving away for three months begging your friends to let you pay their rent on your credit card to hit a spend threshold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You can apply this same value comparison to every instant credit offer.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Which offer is more valuable, instant credit or the regular points bonus?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">9 times out of 10 in a pre-pandemic world, the regular sign-up bonus is going to kick the pants off the instant credit offer. As we just saw above, 2020 is the year where nothing is sacred. Kobe Bryant is gone. A pandemic has turned our world upside down. <em>The instant credit offer is more valuable than the regular points bonus. <\/em>Life as we know it has shifted on its axis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We\u2019ve already looked at American Airlines and its 1.4 cents\/mile valuation to determine if 50,000 miles was greater than or less than 40,000 miles + $250 off. But I believe in #examples, so let\u2019s do Delta and Southwest for the hell of it, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Delta<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Delta\u2019s current instant credit offer is $200 off and 20,000 points \u2013&nbsp;slightly stingier than American\u2019s, but I\u2019d argue Delta\u2019s product is a little nicer \u2013&nbsp;so *shrugs.* <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Here\u2019s their \u201cregular\u201d credit card offer, which is running in parallel (e.g., I Googled, \u201cDelta credit card\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 2318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5e94adbc25a0ae61d843b475\/1596465743337-927HM2EX6A0NNFVDHQW1\/Delta+Credit+Cards?format=original\" alt=\"  The card that\u2019s offered in the checkout process is the gold one on the left, their $99\/year Gold card.  \"\/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The card that\u2019s offered in the checkout process is the gold one on the left, their $99\/year Gold card.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The Points Guy values a Delta mile at <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/monthly-valuations\/\" target=\"_blank\">1.2 cents in July 2020<\/a>, meaning 35,000 miles = $420.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">20,000 miles = $240, + $200 off during purchase = $440. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Again, the instant credit offer beats the regular one \u2013&nbsp;but just barely. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Southwest<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Southwest\u2019s current card offer (as of 8\/3) is 40,000 points. If you recall, the current instant credit offer is 40,000 points + $200 off. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5e94adbc25a0ae61d843b475\/1596466788741-CI1USE7ROMAIDHMFRU35\/Southwest+Credit+Card?format=original\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">You don\u2019t have to be a mathematician to know immediately which option is better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But, for the sake of consistency, let\u2019s do the full breakdown. The Points Guy claims that a Rapid Rewards point is worth approximately 1.5 cents, so 40,000 points is worth $600.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This means your instant credit offer is worth $600 + $200 off your flight, for a total value of $800.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The caveat the rest of the time: How much of a premium am I placing on getting money off right now?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Let\u2019s say you\u2019re faced with this decision in six months from now and the pot is decidedly less sweet. If you\u2019re buying flights all the time, you\u2019re (typically, meaning: not right now) better off going about your credit card application the old-fashioned way: Applying through the \u201cpoints\u201d offer, hitting your spend threshold, and patiently waiting the 3ish months for your points to hit your account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you\u2019re in a bind and need flights right now and for whatever reason can\u2019t spend the money on them, then (I guess) the instant credit offer makes more sense \u2013&nbsp;take your $200 off and be done with it. (I would typically discourage traveling if the $200 credit is make or break for your budget, but sometimes we get put in bad situations and need to fly somewhere, so I\u2019ll leave that choice to you.)<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Final assessment summary<\/h4>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">American Airlines<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong><em>The better deal<\/em><\/strong><em>: Taking the $250 off + 40,000 points while buying an American Airlines flight ($810 in value).<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Delta<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong><em>The better deal, barely<\/em><\/strong><em>: Taking the $200 off + 20,000 points while buying a Delta flight ($440 in value).<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Southwest<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong><em>The better deal, by a landslide<\/em><\/strong><em>: Taking the $200 off + 40,000 points. <\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Obviously, this assumes\u2026<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u2026that you\u2019re buying a flight right now. If you <strong>don\u2019t<\/strong> foresee yourself buying flights over the next month or so, you may be better off going the tried-and-true route and banking all the points for later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I didn\u2019t do this example for every airline that offers a credit card (and I\u2019ve kind of slighted United; my apologies), but hopefully the examples were clear enough that you can apply the same logic wherever, whenever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Curious about which airline cards are best?
