(Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/optimizing-for-happiness-why-i-rented-the-more-expensive-home\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">post<\/span><\/a> about why I ended up opting to rent a more expensive home.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The first week we moved in, I felt like I was in a palace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The sprawling marble kitchen island gave me \u201cbeach house vacation\u201d vibes, and we\u2019d literally lose each other. \u201cWait, where are you? I can\u2019t find you!\u201d we\u2019d exclaim, giddily, as we tried to converse from one end of the house to the other, unable to locate one another in aLL tHe DiFfErEnT rOoMs! A luxury reserved for only the wealthiest, I thought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(This house is ~2,000 square feet, about 500 square feet smaller than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahs.com\/home-matters\/real-estate\/the-2022-american-home-size-index\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">average home size<\/span><\/a> in the US. It\u2019s no mansion. But compared to our 1,000 sf 2BR apartment, it was a huge upgrade.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Luxury is relative<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Today, I love this house and I\u2019m thoroughly enjoying living my life in it. Rent day sucks a little bit more than I\u2019d like it to, and I know we could\u2019ve rented an \u201cinexpensive\u201d townhome for $2,400 instead and saved $600 per month, but I love our tree-lined street, damnit!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Weirdly enough, though, something interesting happened a few months in:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It stopped feeling like a beach house palace with more rooms than people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s all relative, but it\u2019s difficult to downsize\u2014lifestyle creep typically only creeps in one direction.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It just started feeling like my house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">My mind and body normalized to the surroundings, much like they had normalized to my 2BR apartment before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But <em>now<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Now<\/em> if I tried to live in my 2BR apartment again?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While part of me feels a little nostalgic for that place and that phase of life, there\u2019s another part of me that\u2019s like, holy sh*t, that would feel <em>tiny<\/em> by comparison now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s all relative, but it\u2019s difficult to downsize\u2014lifestyle creep typically only creeps in one direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The same thing goes for cars<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">My first car was a 2004 Acura TL. The seats were ripped, it had a few door dings, and it was about 10 years old by the time it became mine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But man, I loved that car. It was a great first car for a teenager. Sporty enough to make me feel cool as hell, but with relatively low residual value\u2014so it wouldn\u2019t have been a huge loss if I crashed it (though I can proudly say I didn\u2019t!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After it hit 225,000 miles and had suffered one (1) gnarly hit-and-run, it was time to retire the car and get a new one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">My parents leased an Acura RDX for me with the remainder of the money they had set aside for my college education. Because I ended up getting a scholarship, they had money earmarked for me that went unused. They told me if I graduated with a 4.0, they\u2019d cover a lease on a new car for the first three years. After that, it was up to me to figure out my #wheels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">(I don\u2019t think they thought I\u2019d actually do it\u2014joke\u2019s on them!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Because I was #YoungAndDumb, I said, \u201cSure! Please agree to pay the steepest depreciation hit on this vehicle so I can promptly give it back with nothing to show for it when I high-key cannot afford to purchase it outright when the lease terminates. Sounds great.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>I was so stuck on continuing to drive a \u2018nice\u2019 car that I ended up purchasing a used Audi A3. I always joke that I can dunk on these decisions because I\u2019ve made them myself and lived out the shitty aftermath firsthand. I\u2019m trying to save you from my own screw-ups.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I wasn\u2019t thinking about three-years-from-now-Katie and what the hell she was going to do when the lease ended. I was just focused on the image of right-now-Katie cruising around Dallas in a brand-new sport utility vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">By the time the lease ended, my budget for a car was $20,000 total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But after driving a brand-new luxury SUV for three years, do you know how interested I was in downgrading to a responsible, used Honda Civic?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Approximately 100% uninterested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The problem was, I couldn\u2019t afford to purchase the RDX outright and still stay within my budget. I wanted an Audi Q3\u2014also way over budget, even used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But I was <em>so stuck<\/em> on continuing to drive a \u201cnice\u201d car (because how fun is it to go from a fancy car to a regular one? Decidedly un-fun) that I ended up purchasing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/a-frugal-ish-car-buying-experience-audi-a3\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">used Audi A3<\/span><\/a>. I didn\u2019t want to choose (what felt like) a downgrade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Don\u2019t get me wrong, I really liked that car (I ended up selling it after a year anyway since we moved to a mountain town where a jellybean with FWD wasn\u2019t really practical), but there was this weird pressure throughout the buying process to get something at least <em>almost<\/em> as nice as what I had before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s hard to go backward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Lifestyle creep is fine within reason, but remember: It\u2019s hard to throw it in reverse (pun not intended, but embraced)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Part of the reason I was so hesitant to lease this home was because, on some level, I knew that it was likely an irreversible step up the lifestyle creep ladder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I knew it would set a new precedent for my baseline that would be hard to reverse\u2014and so far, that\u2019s held true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s usually wise to take smaller steps than you\u2019d think necessary so you can really wring all the joy and excitement out of each and every incremental inch upward.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Before, any house with a front door and functioning plumbing would\u2019ve gotten me hot and bothered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, the houses I lust after in our neighborhood are bigger, prettier, and fancier than ours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s why I find it\u2019s usually wise to take smaller steps than you\u2019d think necessary so you can really wring all the joy and excitement out of each and every incremental inch upward, versus making giant leaps and bounds to which you\u2019ll acclimate quickly (like I sometimes did).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Lifestyle creep\u2014that is, wanting to experience outward proof of your own growth, success, and hard work\u2014is natural. Striving for more is human, which means it\u2019s probably more sensible to try to work <em>with<\/em> those inclinations (tiny, intentional steps up the metaphoric ladder), rather than deny they exist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Because it\u2019s not just asking yourself \u201cCan I afford this right <em>now<\/em>?\u201d It\u2019s, \u201cCan I afford this <em>forever<\/em>?\u201d<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s why I think it\u2019s necessary and helpful to constantly reevaluate your FI (financial independence) number. My FI number has certainly gone up since we moved here, though my income has, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I like to recalculate the goal every single year to make sure that it\u2019s not creeping upward too quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I earn more (and work harder) now than I did when I began working seven years ago, so I <em>want<\/em> to allow myself to selectively enjoy nicer things\u2014<strong>but I <em>don\u2019t<\/em> want to spend the same percentage of my income.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For example, when I first began working (and <em>after<\/em> I got my financial sh*t together, to be clear; that took about a year) I was probably saving about 30% of my income\u2014a really respectable save rate, especially on my salary at the time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>A little lifestyle creep is fine\u2014as long as you\u2019re conscious it\u2019s happening.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now that my income is higher, 30% stops looking so respectable\u2014because spending 70% of a much higher number would connote a pretty extreme lifestyle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As a general rule, even if my spending <em>nominally<\/em> rises with my income (a spending jump from, say, $2,800\/month to $4,500\/month allowed by a higher income), my <strong>savings rate<\/strong> should be rising faster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">My savings mostly go toward investments, but they also help buffer my cash cushion\u2014because as my life becomes more expensive, my old \u201c$10,000 emergency fund\u201d is no longer as powerful as it used to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This ensures I\u2019m not actually slowing down and getting farther behind my goals, despite earning more, which would be a pretty self-defeating way to make financial progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A little lifestyle creep is fine\u2014as long as you\u2019re conscious it\u2019s happening, and you\u2019re comfortable with the idea of paying to maintain that standard of living indefinitely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2021, I transitioned from a 2BR apartment on a busy street in Dallas, Texas, to a 3BR home on a beautiful, tree-lined lane in a quaint town in Northern Colorado.
