{"id":133,"date":"2022-11-21T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-21T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-a-traffic-stop-changed-my-life-luck-randomness\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T16:42:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T16:42:04","slug":"how-a-traffic-stop-changed-my-life-luck-randomness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/how-a-traffic-stop-changed-my-life-luck-randomness\/","title":{"rendered":"How A Traffic Stop Changed My Life: The Role of Luck in Financial Outcomes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This time last year, I went to a Zoom meeting that would change the rest of my life (well, at least the life I know about so far).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The CEO of Morning Brew, Austin Rief, had reached out and asked if I\u2019d be interested in chatting about my year-old side project, Money with Katie. After talking for a few minutes, he cut to the chase: \u201cI want to convince you to come do <em>this<\/em>, but for us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After weeks of Zoom conversations (including one I attended virtually from a hotel room on Thanksgiving morning), we signed an \u201cacquihire\u201d contract the day after my 27th birthday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>Practically overnight, I went from working my full-time job in content design and building Money with Katie on nights and weekends to being a full-time content creator.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Practically overnight, I went from working my full-time job in content design and building Money with Katie on nights and weekends to being a full-time content creator with a generous contractual security blanket, binding me to a benevolent media company safety net (and health insurance plan) for 36 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This classic \u201csuccess story\u201d is almost so cookie-cutter that I have to double-check sometimes that it\u2019s actually happening to me, and that it\u2019s not some cubicle daydream. My November 2022 life would have been almost unrecognizable to me from my November 2019 vantage point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But the popped champagne, spilled tears, and breathless, \u201c<em>Holy shit, I can\u2019t believe this is happening<\/em>\u201ds that filled our kitchen when I signed the contract were <em>not<\/em> solely the culmination of a month\u2019s worth of Zoom negotiations and lawyer-approved emails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In fact, it probably never would have happened had I not gotten a traffic citation three years earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Wait, what? A traffic citation?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sometimes, we mischaracterize luck<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That\u2019s because my internet friendship with Morning Brew\u2019s CEO didn\u2019t begin in November 2021\u2014it began in the spring of 2018, when I was pulled over for reading Morning Brew at a red light.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A few expletives later (and after safely parking my vehicle at work), I tweeted to let <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/morningbrew\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">@morningbrew<\/span><\/a> know just how much I loved their product\u2014enough to pay a $150 citation to read it from my phone at a red light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Austin noticed, followed me back, and DM\u2019d me:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cHey,\u201d he said, \u201cThat\u2019s hilarious. We\u2019re going to pay for the ticket.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And thus began an internet rapport\u2014a loose, random connection that almost wasn\u2019t, but a connection that meant when I launched Money with Katie two years later, it appeared on a feed of content mainlined to Austin\u2019s phone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>Had I not been pulled over that day, I\u2019m not sure we would\u2019ve ever crossed paths.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Had I not been pulled over that day, I\u2019m not sure we would\u2019ve ever crossed paths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Had I not tweeted about it, I doubt he would\u2019ve ever seen Money with Katie on his feed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Had he not been the guy manning the Brew\u2019s Twitter account back then, I\u2019d probably be sitting here at 1pm on a Thursday working on an app disclosure screen for Meta (if I weren\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/09\/meta-to-lay-off-more-than-11000-thousand-employees.html\" target=\"_blank\">laid off<\/a>!), not on this blog post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It was dumb fucking luck.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We make thousands of decisions every single day\u2014the problem is, we don\u2019t know which ones are consequential<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We pick the early flight instead of the late one. We go for a run down this street and not that one. We try the new coffee place on the corner, or we go for kombucha instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">If you sit back and consider the sheer number of choices you\u2019re faced with on a daily basis, it\u2019s enough to make you curse <em>The Butterfly Effect <\/em>and hide in your room. It\u2019s <em>dizzying<\/em>, because we never know which choice is going to catapult our lives in a completely different direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A traffic citation is innocent (albeit stupid) enough; at the time, I beat myself up over it for the remainder of the week, taking it as proof that I\u2019m bad at following rules and <em>if I weren\u2019t always running so late all the time maybe I wouldn\u2019t have felt like I needed to check email in the car<\/em>, plus a number of other \u201cadult\u201d things I considered myself \u201cbad at\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>We often ignore the massive role of another factor that blindly bestows good or bad things upon us: luck.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In retrospect <em>now<\/em>, though, it\u2019s clear just how fateful\u2014how significant\u2014that seemingly insignificant stupid decision was.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And sure\u2014maybe Austin and I would\u2019ve crossed paths some other way. Maybe I\u2019ll look back on my decision to pursue Money with Katie full-time someday and consider it the humble beginnings of totally different, exciting things. Maybe the path I\u2019d be on right now had I not been pulled over that day (and tweeted about it) would be infinitely cooler, better, and more enriching (though, seems hard to beat).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But I have no way of knowing, because I <em>did<\/em> get pulled over. I <em>did<\/em> tweet about it. And I <em>did<\/em> decide to take him up on it\u2014and as a result of that sequence of events, I\u2019ve reached a state of career fulfillment at age 27 that I could\u2019ve only dreamed of just a few years ago while fighting tooth and nail for a 15% raise on a $52,000 salary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Yes, I built Money with Katie in obscurity for 18 months before anyone looked twice at it (and to suggest I\u2019m not <em>still<\/em> toiling away in relative obscurity is a stretch), and sure, that took some work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And many of us are pretty willing to admit where privilege has positively impacted our outcomes, but we often ignore the massive role of another factor that blindly bestows good or bad things upon us: <em>luck<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">To acknowledge luck\u2019s role in our lives is to acknowledge we aren\u2019t <em>always<\/em> the ones in control<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">One of the best pieces I\u2019ve read about luck was a beautiful, thought-provoking exploration of a very tragic day: \u201cIt\u2019s hard to come away from the stories of 9\/11 with a sense of anything other than an appreciation for the role randomness plays in our daily existence,\u201d writes Garrett Graff for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/09\/september-11-blind-luck-decided-who-lived-or-died\/597688\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/span><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But there are plenty of positive examples, too: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strivediary.com\/examples-of-good-luck\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Bill Gates<\/span><\/a> went to one of the only high schools in America with computer programming terminals. Gates himself estimates there were probably only 50 other students on Earth who had access to the same technology he did, and it was just the dumb luck of where he was born and attended school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sir Alexander Fleming discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strivediary.com\/examples-of-good-luck\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">penicillin<\/span><\/a> when he accidentally left a Petri dish open during a holiday break and a specific type of mold fell into it and killed the bacteria, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Alexander_Fleming#:~:text=Penicillin%20became%20the%20most%20effective,as%20a%20medicine%20in%201942.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">200 million lives<\/span><\/a> have been saved as a result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This is\u2014for obvious reasons\u2014incredibly disconcerting. We <em>want<\/em> to believe we\u2019re the ones in control, that we\u2019re the ones calling the shots. That our hard work (combined with, for some of us, privilege) will be enough to shepherd us toward the fate we deserve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That if we work hard enough, and long enough, and sacrifice enough, we\u2019ll be guaranteed the financial outcomes we are rightfully owed. The careers of our idols. The portfolios of our dreams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">To believe anything else would probably prove too demoralizing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Even the year you\u2019re <em>born<\/em> determines how rich you become<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Any time we talk about the bouquet of shortest ends of the stick that millennials collectively hold, there\u2019s a glint of a silver lining that typically follows. Somewhere, deep down, I think we all believe we\u2019ll still end up just as wealthy as the Boomers a few decades ahead of us. We hope that some intervening force\u2014be it luck, privilege, or hard work\u2014will correct the decades of bad breaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But even the stock market is not equally magnanimous to every generation of investors. It does not bequeath the <em>same<\/em> average annualized market returns on every retiree who skates into Naples, Florida on a Roth IRA and a dream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As Nick Maggiulli <a href=\"https:\/\/ofdollarsanddata.com\/bad-investment-results-your-birth-year-may-be-to-blame\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">points out<\/span><\/a>, the year you\u2019re born can be a pretty substantial determinant of how much wealth you accrue over your lifetime, all else being equal: Luck matters more than you think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Check this out:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ofdollarsanddata.com\/bad-investment-results-your-birth-year-may-be-to-blame\/\"  target=\"_blank\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20yearreturns.webp\" alt=\"  Courtesy of Data Daddy Nick Maggiulli and Of Dollars and Data.  \"\/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of Data Daddy Nick Maggiulli and Of Dollars and Data.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Two people holding the exact same index fund for the exact same amount of time will have wildly different outcomes, depending on when they start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Things smooth <em>a little<\/em> when you zoom out by 40 years, but there are still generations of investors who were <em>far<\/em> luckier than others:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ofdollarsanddata.com\/bad-investment-results-your-birth-year-may-be-to-blame\/\"  target=\"_blank\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/moneywithkatie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/40yearreturns.webp\" alt=\"  Also courtesy of Nick Maggiulli and Of Dollars and Data.  \"\/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Also courtesy of Nick Maggiulli and Of Dollars and Data.<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<h2 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Luck keeps us humble <em>and<\/em> hopeful<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I can trace one of my most significant life events to a traffic stop four years ago, and you know what? That keeps my ass <em>in line<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The randomness of my lucky break hinged on an almost non-event\u2014nobody knows how things would\u2019ve played out if I didn\u2019t break the law that day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Acknowledging the key role of randomness\u2014from the year you\u2019re born to the age you are when you stumble across your first piece of financial advice, to which obscure tweet makes it in front of the right person at the right time\u2014reminds us that we are not the only ones responsible for the good things that happen to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Conversely, our decisions aren\u2019t always to <em>blame <\/em>when things go wrong. That can help us remain hopeful for the future, and avoid the self-loathing that so often accompanies the belief that our lives are the perfect, equalized manifestations of our choices and nothing more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"block-animation-site-default\">\n<blockquote data-animation-role=\"quote\" \n<p>   ><br \/>\n    <span>\u201c<\/span>Hard work works, but luck works, too.<span>\u201d<\/span>\n  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As Mariel Beasley of the Common Cents Lab said in this <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-money-with-katie-show\/id1589146097?i=1000580149903\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">interview<\/span><\/a> for <em>The Money with Katie Show<\/em>, \u201cWe like to think that it\u2019s our good decisions that are to thank for our positive financial outcomes, but a lot of the time, we\u2019re just exposed to the right environments.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And what\u2019s true about the environments we often find ourselves in? They\u2019re also the result of dumb luck: The college that happened to be recruiting from your high school, the workplace that was hiring for your skill set the year you graduated, the family responsible for birthing you into this world\u2026<em>the year you were born!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Hard work works, but luck works, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">To quote Seneca: \u201cLuck equals preparation plus opportunity.\u201d If you work hard to lay the groundwork, you\u2019ll be ready when opportunity knocks\u2014you just can\u2019t control when it\u2019ll go trick-or-treating in <em>your<\/em> neighborhood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This time last year, I went to a Zoom meeting that would change the rest of my life (well, at least the life I know about so far).
