The ironic thing about this post is that a lot of my fellow salaried peeps are probably feeling slight, secret pity for the freelance hustlers out there who don\u2019t have a consistent income, but my friends \u2013&nbsp;<em>your freelance friends are probably making more than all of us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019ve seen women quit their full-time jobs where they were guaranteed $4,000\/mo. \u201csafely\u201d only to find out they would actually have months where they could pull in $11,000 at a time working for themselves. In other words, we put salaries on a pedestal because they\u2019re predictable and easy to work with, but often times the way you actually become wealthy is through creatively building your work and income in a way that works for you. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">That said, it\u2019s harder to commit to automatic transfers and a strategic financial plan when your September income was $11,000 and your October income was $500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Harder, but not impossible.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Setting up your Primary List<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Before you do anything else, set up your Primary List \u2013&nbsp;this is your guide to your own life and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-much-does-your-life-cost\" target=\"_blank\">how much it costs<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I literally want you to pull up an Excel document, copy and paste this, and then put numbers beside it. Seriously. It\u2019s okay (great, even) if the answer for some of these things is \u201c$0\u201d or a rough estimate, but the idea is that we\u2019re assigning values to the things you need to live.<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cost of your home (usually this is rent, but it might be a mortgage)<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Water bill<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Average cost of electric\/power<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Trash\/fees<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Wifi\/cable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cost of your vehicle\/transportation<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Car payment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Car insurance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Public transportation costs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Parking\/tolls<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Average monthly grocery spend (try to think about what you\u2019d spend in a week x4)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Debt minimum payments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Streaming services &amp; cell phone<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Gym\/health\/wellness clubs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Travel (if you can\u2019t think about it on a monthly basis, try to annualize it \u2013 two big trips per year might total about $3,000, so you can divide by 12 and assume your monthly allotment should be $250)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Variable expenses<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Dining out (restaurants and bars \u2013 this category is probably a trouble spot for you if you\u2019re 25 and live in a city)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Personal care (haircuts, nail appointments, eyelashes\u2026 the list for this one goes on, and again, I would bet it\u2019s somewhere you could probably afford to cut back if need be, based on what I\u2019ve seen in the past in my own life and clients\u2019)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Pet care (doggy daycare is criminally expensive!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Shopping (yes, I see that Free People tab open, and I\u2019m going to encourage you to close it)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Miscellaneous \u2013 gifts, donations, etc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This list is not exhaustive, but it should cover a lot of the major areas that you\u2019re probably spending.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now that you\u2019ve got your list, put these things in bold:<\/h4>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cost of your home (usually this is rent, but it might be a mortgage)<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Water bill<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Average cost of electric\/power<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Trash\/fees<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Wifi\/cable<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Cost of your vehicle\/transportation<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Car payment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Car insurance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Public transportation costs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Parking\/tolls<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Average monthly grocery spend (try to think about what you\u2019d spend in a week x4)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Debt minimum payments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">These are your real living expenses \u2013&nbsp;the things that you can structurally lower (by finding a cheaper apartment, buying a used car, etc.), but can\u2019t necessarily \u201ccut back on.\u201d It\u2019d be a little challenging to tell your landlord you only need a few hundred square feet this month and to keep the patio. Everything else that\u2019s left unbolded is far more flexible month over month.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Total up your bolded living expenses<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Again, this is an exercise that\u2019s intended to provide rough guidance. Obviously, if we were doing this together, we\u2019d be going over things with a fine-tooth comb \u2013 but I want you to get a general sense right away. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The number that you see on the document is your bare minimum, or what you need to live. That\u2019s the number we\u2019ll be using moving forward to determine what\u2019s \u201cleft over\u201d every month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The remaining money on a monthly basis will be divided between your fun, discretionary stuff (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneywithkatie.com\/blog\/how-to-budget-for-discretionary-fun-stuff\" target=\"_blank\">an article that dives a little deeper on budgeting for fun stuff lives here<\/a>) and saving and investing. <\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your Emergency Fund needs to be beefier than a salaried person\u2019s Emergency Fund because things are slightly more unpredictable<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I want you to think about the Emergency Fund a little bit differently. Let\u2019s call it a \u201c<strong>Lean Month<\/strong>\u201d account. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This means, to extend the example above, that if you <em>do<\/em> happen to have a $500 month and your living expenses \u201cbold number\u201d is $2,500, you can use $2,000 of your Lean Month account to cover it. Then, the next time you have a Fat Month (like an $11,000 September!), you\u2019ll put the $2,000 right back in to make up for it. Easy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While I usually recommend people have four full months of all expenses (living, fun money, investment account contributions, etc.) saved in their Emergency Fund, I\u2019d recommend you go for six. That way, you could have six Lean Months in a row and still be covered. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">So do me a favor. Add <em>all<\/em> of your variable expenses to that big, bolded total, and see what comes out. It\u2019s probably going to be higher than you think, and that\u2019s OK. Multiply by 6. <strong>That\u2019s your Lean Month savings account goal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your sole purpose in life from this point forward is to hit that balance in your Lean Month account<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I\u2019m not messin\u2019 around! Let\u2019s get serious about it. As soon as you hit it, you can taper back. Maybe you\u2019ve already got it! <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">From there, it\u2019ll become a more automatic situation, and you can think about your investment contributions moving forward like a waterfall. Here\u2019s the order of your priorities:<\/p>\n<ol data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your \u201cbold\u201d expenses \u2013 rent, car, groceries, etc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Your \u201cfun\u201d expenses \u2013 but within reason. I recommend reading that post about how to budget for fun stuff to determine what you can <em>afford<\/em> to be budgeting for fun stuff based on your financial situation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Replenishing any of your Lean Month account that you\u2019ve used.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Contributing to your Roth IRA (the maximum annual contribution is $6,000, so I like to do $500\/mo.).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Anything left over (in a fat month, like September, in this example) goes straight to an individual, taxable brokerage account. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While you can\u2019t necessarily take advantage of things like auto-transfers, you can strategize around making this a routine.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">On the last day of the month, make it a personal finance date with yourself<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Go to your favorite coffee shop, treat yourself to a fancy drink (I will pride myself on being the only personal finance site on the internet that will instruct you to go buy a $5 coffee), and get cozy with your checking account. Add up your incoming payments to see what you\u2019re working with for the previous month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After you subtract your TOTAL from the list above, what\u2019s left? Maybe you\u2019re in the red. If it\u2019s negative, you know you gotta tap that Lean Month account. If you\u2019re sitting on $5,000 extra, fantastic. Cycle through your list \u2013&nbsp;replenish anything you\u2019ve used, try to max out the IRA with $500, and put the rest in your taxable brokerage account.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">An optional resource for math-ing your way through this<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Look, I get it.
